Recycled Jars

I love recycling but not necessarily the kind where we send a bunch of stuff to the curb to be picked up by the big green truck. I like recycling in our own home, finding new uses for items that have already lived one life. My latest is jars. I've started trying to eat a more whole grain diet and love cooking from scratch and as a result, I noticed I had lots and lots of bags of bulk ingredients tossed into my cabinet. One day I got fed up with the mess, I gathered all the jars I had stashed here and there, created some chalkboard labels using my Silhouette and created my new favorite shelf in my kitchen:

I love finding a new recipe then turning to my shelf to pull down all my bulk ingredients. It makes cooking even more fun! Here's one breakfast made possible by this setup:

Breakfast

I made a batch of wheatberries one evening so the next morning, I put some in a bowl and added the following:

  • Vanilla almond milk
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Fresh cherries
  • Sliced almonds
  • Coconut
  • Craisins
  • Maple Syrup
I warmed the whole thing up in the microwave for about a minute and enjoyed every last bite of the wholesome goodness. Of course, only a few of those items were in the jars but without the almonds, coconut and craisins, I don't think my breakfast would have been half as good.

Do you shop in the bulk bins at your local grocery store? How do you store them?

Thank you for reading,
Julie
