Modern Nursery Design

I was recently asked to design a modern nursery for a client and while I won't have before and after pictures, I did want to share the design board I came up with. The colors I decided on are Stormy Weather (D16-3) in the Olympic no VOC paint from Lowes for the walls, the existing warm white on the baseboards and trim around the windows then accents of brown in the furniture and orange in the accessories. I drew this elephant myself using a combination of features of many different modern elephants I found online. The fabric for the valances, crib skirt and other accessories will be custom printed.

Please feel free to use any of these ideas but if you're going to take my elephant, I'd appreciate if you'd let me know (and I require after shots of how you use him).

The Deisgn Board

Inspiration Page

Crib and Dresser: Babyletto Modo 3-in-1 Convertible Crib in Espresso/White
Picture Frame(s): Ribba Series from Ikea
Leather Rocker/Recliner: Vreta Swivel/Rocker/Recliner from Ikea
Orange modern lamp: Fillsta from Ikea - purchased one orange and one white and mixed up the pieces so the lamp is orange and white. Also purchased a dimmer switch so it could serve as a warm nightlight glow rather than a full strength lamp.
Wall Clock: Kvarta from Ikea - Face of clock to be updated with my elephant in some way

The bookshelf pictured is merely an inspiration piece. I plan to custom build a similar unit that will fit in a corner. The side table photo is just for inspriation as well. The design includes a lot of rectangles so I want to create a side table using circles somehow. There will also be soft accessories throughout such as tissue paper puffs (pictured above) above the changing table and circular mirrors hanging on the wall. I also plan to do custom elephant themed artwork for over the crib (secured very well to the wall, not just hanging).

I searched and searched for affordable modern furniture for this project and found that these were my best options. WalMart actually sells a good looking modern crib but I didn't like the coordinating pieces nor did I like the reviews those coordinating pieces received. If I just needed a crib, theirs would be the one I'd purchase.

Have you designed a modern nursery? Do you have ideas about where to purchase affordable nursery furniture? I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  1. Color is important in defining your baby’s space. In the past, a baby girl meant a pink room, while a boy’s room would be dressed in blue. While this may still be tradition, incorporate other colors to complement pink or blue and still maintain the girlish or boyish look of the room. Brown is a nice muted base for either pink and blue, and gives a nursery a classic, modern vibe.

  2. Thanks for your comments. I forgot to mention in the main post that they actually didn't know the gender of the child so we were going to add some fun pink (probably brighter to go with the orange) and/or purple accessories for a girl or green and/or blue for a boy. I wanted to build a gender neutral space that we could have some more fun with later.
